Changes are afoot in v1.84

I’ve been working on the toolkit when free time in work allows. This has meant that the following has been developed so far in v1.84:

1) The Document Properties Reporter is now running in a separate add-in. This will be available soon on its own website (http://documentpropertiesreporter.weebly.com/ – currently a 404 page whilst I sort out the pages).

2) The tables tab from the Toolbox has now been promoted to the main ribbon. This will enable me to increase the size of the form and add more features. The only one I’ve added so far is the ability to toggle a table’s automatic resize state.

By default, unless you’ve got your own custom table style, Word inserts a table with the automatic resize option switched on. This will rearrange the cells as and when necessary to fit them into the cell space available. This new toggle button will give you the option to switch it off so that the table cells remain static.

3) A few minor bug fixes here and there due to the Configuration options being split between two add-ins. That caused a few grey cells to be zapped as I worked out which ones belonged to which add-in. They will still live in the Mike’s Toolbox registry area though. Seemed daft creating yet another area in the registry for the new add-in.

4) Lots more bulk fixes have been added, including:

  1. a) Single or Double curly quotes can be changed back into bog-standard (boring) apostrophes. This was more of an internal fix for some of Word’s default settings for documents we issue. But if you need to do it to your own documents, you can.
  2. b) Hyphens / En Dashes / Em Dashes. Three new functions (with two sub-functions each) will let you switch between each of the types. The only caveat is that the character you’re replacing needs to have a space either side. This is to prevent the function from mucking up hyphenated words.

That’s it for now. The current beta (v1.84c) is doing the rounds with my colleagues so I daresay I’ll be busy when I get back from my long weekend away.

New version (v1.83) of my Word toolbox now available

The latest version of my Word Add-In (v1.83) is now available.

New features are:

  • – Examine all of the bookmarks in your document and toggle their show/hide status, delete individual or all or highlight one/all bookmarks in a colour of your choice.
  • – Expert Mode – switches off a lot of the message boxes that pop up when certain functions are used.
  • – More ‘Search And Replace’ bulk fixes. All are based on documents that we’ve had to fix.
  • – Launch the PDF manual direct from within the toolbox.
  • – Word 2010 and Word 2007 compatibility
  • – Detection of Inline Shapes and Shapes on the Additional Information tab.
  • – Which Fonts now uses a single message box instead of multiple ones.
  • – Correct detection of multiple documents being open when launching Toolbox or Back To Basics.
  • – Select unused Custom Styles (ready for deletion) – requested by a TA on my Trello board.
  • – Counter shows how many character changes occurred after a Bulk Fixes option has been selected.

Tweaks:

Tons of code improvements and a truck-load of bug fixes and form changes.

The full list is in the manual of all the changes made in v1.83.

Forthcoming changes:

The Document Properties Reporter will be split off into a separate app. This is to allow a Mac version of the Toolbox to be created. The Mac version of VBA doesn’t support Windows File System commands – oddly enough 🙂

Documentation done – just the add-in to double-check

My colleagues in the Documentation Team were set a task last week to scour through my add-in’s documentation and pick out the holes within. And they didn’t let me down 🙂

I even found a few afterwards whilst fixing the errors that they had found for me – any technical author will tell you that they are ‘blind’ to their own document’s errors, until it’s pointed out by someone else.

My thanks to Holly, Steve and Beth for the vigorous proofreading.

So that’s the writing done, now just to double-check that all of the add-in code is neat, compact as possible and ready for release. Then tweak this website and upload the files for the full release of v1.83.

Then I’m taking a break 🙂
